Trellised Word Clouds

Let us demonstrate how to compare text profiles using word clouds, by considering the text of the collected plays of William Shakespeare.

We are working with the dataset Shakespeare's Plays, created from the datafile shakespeare_play_text.csv.

  1. Start a new Word Cloud visual based on dataset Shakespeare's Plays. See Importing Data, Creating Datasets, and Creating Visuals.
  2. Populate the shelves from the available fields:

    • Add the field Text to the Dimensions shelf.
    • Add the field Record Count to the Measures shelf.
    • Add the field Play to the X shelf to trellis the visual.
    • Add the field Play to the Filters shelf, and select some of the plays. We filtered on Anthony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Othello, and Troilus and Cressida.
  3. [Optional] Remove the trellis borders, as described in Showing Trellis Borders.
  4. Click Refresh Visual.

  5. Save and Close the visual.

Notice that the word clouds for these plays feature the names of leading characters prominently.
